Anxiety treatment tailored to teens

Every teen is different and every teen’s anxiety can present differently. Maybe your teen struggles with excessive worry about school or social situations. Do they complain of an upset stomach, feeling jittery or intense body sensations like a pounding heart, dizziness or lightheadedness? Does your teen avoid things that make them anxious like social situations or school? All of these are signs of anxiety and each needs different skills to manage them. At True North we listen to exactly what is going on with your teen and decide on which therapies would be the most effective, this can include scientifically based treatment modalities like CBT ( Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Mindfulness, Breathing techniques, and getting to the root of the anxiety.

Telehealth for teens with Anxiety.

Many times the thought of meeting with a therapist, can raise a teen’s anxiety, that’s why we offer anxiety therapy for teens in the comfort of their own homes or bedrooms! Telehealth is just as effective as in-person therapy. It is also a great option for teens and parents whose schedules are hectic. If you are a parent, it’s one less place they need to drive to, especially if you live far away. All telehealth is done on a secure HIPPA-compliant platform called Doxy.me.

Trustworthy Therapy

We value the trust that you put in us to help your teen. We take it very seriously. In the state of Washington, teens have the right to consent to who is involved and informed about what is going on in counseling. While teens have this right, we often encourage them to let us communicate with parents about their treatment. While some teens are hesitant about us talking to their parents, we discuss the benefits of communication. We assure them that they can choose what they want known and what they want to keep confidential. We try our best to be open and honest with parents and encourage them to ask questions about how their teen is doing. While we may not be able to give exact details about what is discussed in sessions our aim is to help you feel confident that your child is getting the best treatment possible.

Medication is a personal decision

At True North we believe that therapy is the first line of defense against anxiety. We believe that medication is a personal and important decision between a teenager and their parents. We will never push medication as the answer for your teen’s anxiety. We are happy to answer questions about anxiety and whether or not we think it may be helpful, however. If you and your teen decide that medication is an option we have a list of providers we trust that we can refer you too.

FAQ

  • We take Regence, Aetna, Pacific Source and First Choice.

  • Appointments typically last 53-60 minutes.

  • The frequency of the sessions depends on many things but some are your schedule, the schedule of the therapist and how often the therapist thinks it may be necessary based on your child’s individual needs.

  • The most important thing in therapy is that both the therapist and you feel like it’s a good fit! Sometimes that doesn’t happen. If that is the case you can be sure that we will provide referrals to who we think would be a good fit.

  • We believe that if a teen is unwilling to come to therapy than their decision should be respected. It has been our experience that when teens feel forced to come to therapy that little progress can be made.

  • No. We believe it is important for your child to have their own therapist who they feel is their advocate, for that reason, if family therapy is needed we refer out for those needs.
