Understanding Feelings and Emotions beyond a Diagnosis
Your child is never just a diagnosis at True North Counseling. While a diagnosis can help understand what is affecting your teen, we see it as simply information that informs what skills need to be taught. We believe that fostering a relationship that helps people feel seen, heard, and understood creates real change. We strive for your child to feel comfortable in expressing their thoughts, feelings and behaviors in a non-judgmental and trusting relationship with the therapist. It’s common for us to hear things from teens like “I really trust you”, “I feel like you really listen to me “ and “ I feel super comfortable talking to you.” We believe that seeing the person and not the diagnosis allows for real change.
A Counselor you can trust
In Washington State, teenagers have full autonomy in their treatment, which means parents can sometimes be left out of the loop. We know how vulnerable this can feel. At True North, we encourage our teenagers to let us communicate with parents as much as they feel comfortable with. During the intake, parents are encouraged to be a part of the session and are informed throughout the counseling process as to their child’s progress. As a parent, you should feel like you can trust that your child is getting the best care that they can be given. While some teens can feel uncomfortable with their parents knowing what is going on, many of our teenage clients have felt comfortable with parents being informed simply because they have built trust in their therapist to communicate their needs.
Medication is Your Decision, not ours
We understand that the issue of medication can be a very personal decision. At True North Counseling medication is never pushed as the solution. We think the decision to use medication is a personal one made between parents and their children. We are happy to provide information on the pros and cons of medication and referrals to providers we trust but our main goal is to provide effective therapy to help your child to thrive.
Finances Shouldn’t be the biggest obstacle
More and more therapists are not taking insurance due to a variety of factors. While we may understand and respect our colleagues we believe it is a moral duty for us to be paneled with a variety of insurance companies to make counseling affordable. We take Regence, Aetna, Pacific Source, First -Choice. While we don’t take every insurance, many insurances have Out-of Network benefits that we can provide statements to help you be reimbursed according to your insurance plan. Counseling is an investment in your child’s well-being but it shouldn’t be completely out of reach.

The most important thing in therapy is that both the therapist and you feel like it’s a good fit! Sometimes that doesn’t happen. If that is the case you can be sure that we will provide referrals to who we think would be a good fit.
-
No. We believe it is important for your child to have their own therapist who they feel is their advocate, for that reason, if family therapy is needed we refer out for those needs.
-
We do not do testing for ADHD. Testing is done by a PHD level Psychiatrist or Psychologist. If testing is needed we will refer you to someone.
